If I decide to take out life cover will I need to go for a medical?

Once your application has been submitted to the insurer it will be assessed by a medical underwriter.

The life insurance provider will either accept your application immediately, or they could request a medical report from your General Practitioner.  You may also be asked to attend a medical examination, which will be paid for by the insurer.

Once a premium is quoted, will it change?

If the life insurance provider is happy with your application and are satisfied with your state of health, your application will be accepted at normal rates and the premium will be as quoted.  If the life insurance provider is concerned by any medical details you have disclosed, then they may apply a rating to your application, which can result in an increase in premium.  Once the terms have been offered, there is no obligation and you are free to decline the cover, should the cost become too expensive for you.

Does it make a difference to the cost of life cover if I smoke?

Yes, the cost is higher if you smoke.  In order to be accepted as a non-smoker, most life insurance providers require that you have not smoked any tobacco products for at least 12 months
